Beauty means a lot to women -- and even to men. Everyday images of beautiful women are thrown at you in magazines and on television. We all want to look as good as an A-lister, but celebrities have the luxury of money and airbrushing. We have to make do with what we can afford. So here are some of my favourite tips and tricks, which won't break the bank but will have you looking gorgeous!
1. Olive oil for your hair
Over-straightening and over-dying can play havoc with your hair. I LOVE using olive oil to make my hair feel soft and manageable. Take1/2 mug of olive oil. Warm it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds (careful it's not too hot!) then massage into your hair and scalp. Relax for 30 minutes to an hour then wash out with shampoo followed by conditioner. Your hair will feel lovely and soft. I also love using Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment for a treat, but Olive Oil is much cheaper!
2. Big hair
I used to envy the Cheryl Cole big hair look. I didn't want a bird's nest on top of my head but did want some volume to my naturally flat, long, brown hair. I achieve the look by washing my hair as usual with shampoo and conditioner, then towel drying my hair with my head upside down. I then put mousse in my hair and work it through the roots. A curling mouse is best, not too much or it goes sticky and hard when it dries. If you can let your hair dry naturally then great, if not dry your hair with the hairdryer on a low heat, keeping your head upside down as long as you can. The finished look should be high in volume but not in any way appealing to pigeons.
3. Eyeliner that stays on
My eyeliner always smudges around the bottom of my eyes by the end of the day. So I have a technique to prevent this. But please be careful when trying this one out! Take your kohl eyeliner and hold the end of it in an open flame (e.g. a lighter) for NO MORE than one second. It will heat the eyeliner and make it stay on longer. Make sure you let it cool before putting it in your eye and be careful as tiny particles of the eyeliner can easily fall into your eye and cause you immense pain. This one is not for the feint-hearted!
4. Baby wipes are a girl's best friend
I have sensitive eyes. So to use perfumed make-up wipes is a big no. I find non-perfumed wipes to sometimes be too 'wet'. Branded make-up wipes often only have a few in a pack and cost an arm and a leg to buy. I use Huggies baby wipes. I prefer them to Pampers because they aren't as wet. They remove all my make-up, including eye make-up and are often buy one get one free so last ages. Perfect for your face or hands etc. Although they don't have cleansing properties I use a separate cleanser anyway so why waste more money on expensive wipes?
5. Home-made face masks
Face masks can be as little as a pound in supermarkets. Which is great. But it's more fun to make your own and probably better for you. Here's my favourite recipe. Take half a banana, half an avocado, one tablespoon of chopped cucumber, one tablespoon of natural yoghurt and one tablespoon of olive oil. Mix together and put a thick layer over your face. Then place some cucumber over your eyes and relax for ten minutes. Wash off with clean water and you will be left with softer skin.
6. Tips for the shower
Each morning when I take a shower, I have a few things I do. I put the plug in the shower (it's in my bath) to let a small amount of water build up around my feet. This softens them and gives them an extra clean. After I have conditioned my hair I turn the shower to cold. This makes your hair shinier and closes all your pores which have been opened by the hot water from the shower. I also like to cleanse my face in the shower with a foaming wash, the shower ensures all the cleanser is washed away and there is no build up left on my face all day. One last tip for the shower, if you have dyed your hair but find the result is too dark, try using a anti-dandruff shampoo to lighten the look.
7. Healthy Hair = no heat
I know I mention hair A LOT. I think your hair makes a massive difference to your appearance. Even if you don't wear make-up good hair will make you feel good. I try my hardest never to use heat on my hair. I have barely straightened my hair for years now and the condition has improved dramatically. I also rarely use the hair-dryer and the effect it has had is amazing. Nine times out of ten your natural hair colour will suit you better than anything you could dye it. I have had black hair, dark brown, black with pink in, black with orange in, bleached blonde and highlighted blonde hair. But since leaving it alone about four years ago, my hair has never looked better.
8. Home-made body scrubs.
Body scrubs are great to use before shaving your legs. They are invigorating for the skin and keep your circulation moving along nicely. They also prevent ingrown hairs which can be painful and not too appealing. There are hundreds of these recipes online, but my favourite is three tablespoons of baby oil, one tablespoon of granulated white sugar and one tablespoon of natural yoghurt. Mix them all together and rub over your body for a moisturising scrub that's not too harsh. I have sensitive skin so am wary of rubbing too much scrub all over my body!
9. Products I love
As much as I try to make products at home these are some I just can't live without buying and the reasons why.
Bio Oil - I suffered acne as a teenager and after being referred to a dermatologist and being put on a pill which eventually cured my acne, I have been left with scars on my back. Scars don't bother me, I always say I would rather scars than spots but Bio Oil has been great at reducing the appearance of the scars and making me feel more confident.
Ojon Restorative Hair Treatment - I mentioned before how much I love this. It smells lovely/vile (you decide!) and reminds me of coffee. But you leave it on your hair for as long as possible and afterwards your hair is transformed. Good if you have been using too much hair dye!
Stop N Grow - No matter how hard I try I can't stop biting my nails. So when I really want to give it a go I have used this. If you apply it every day it does stop you biting your nails as it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. But you have to be consistent with the applications, hence why my nails are still being bitten!
